A few years ago I was on the prowl for a “new” WordPress social share plugin. I’ve never been one of those fancy people that have their social sharing hard coded into their site, and at the time I was using something I’d been using forever. Which, I find, is the case with bloggers and their social sharing plugins 99% of the time. We use them because we’ve used them forever.
I don’t remember what precipitated the search for a share plugin, but I’m sure I was forced into the situation. Social share plugins aren’t “sexy,” like other aspects of blogging, at least not until now. I’ve discovered the first sexy Wordpress social share plugin my friends: Social Warfare. I’ve used it for nearly two years now, and unlike others that I’ve used that are typically lacking in certain aspects, Social Warfare has it all. Let me show you all the features and pros/cons of each.
Social Warfare WordPress Social Share Plugin
Set up of the plugin is easy but I do have a criticism here. You actually need two plugins – the base Social Warfare and then Social Warfare Pro. I’ve grown up my whole blogging life hearing that I need to keep the number of plugins on my site down, so downloading two for one tool didn’t (and still doesn’t) thrill me. It was actually implemented in December of 2016, and you can see their explanation of why they did it here. Ultimately I use the plugin regardless, and my issue is easily outweighed by the pros.
Set Up is Quick and Easy
In terms of setup, it pops right out of the box, into your blog, and it’s relatively intuitive. You can see above that it’s drag and drop, and you can display share counts easily. I really love this interface for that reason. Everything is very self explanatory and most things slide from right to left if you want them “On” or “Off.” That’s pretty foolproof to me.
Another portion of this screen that I like is that you can set a Pin button to hover over your images (NO separate plugin which a lot of you have!). If you use Yummly, you can set that button to show up only on recipe posts, which is what I do on my blog DIY Candy. This is genius as far as I’m concerned.
A Breeze To Customize
In terms of the “Styles” portion of this plugin, I’m showing you above what I’ve been able to do on Mod Podge Rocks. You can set the size, color, styling, hover, and alignment. I really love that I can use a custom color on my buttons to match my branding. It’s amazing how many sharing plugins just don’t have that.
In addition to customizing your social buttons, you’ll put your profiles in so that they are automatically tacked on to shares (if you choose). There is an Advanced tab that allows you to attach bit.lys, change some advanced Pinterest settings, and even do a Share Recovery (restore your share counts). THIS is crucial. Other plugins I’ve used dump your share counts like a hot potato when you change anything. Social Warfare has been consistent which I greatly appreciate. I’ve never even had to restore share counts (but I have the option if I ever need to).
Finally, you can turn off share buttons on certain posts if you want to. There are some posts I just don’t want the share buttons there because it’s a post I do for a different reason (like my press page), so this works well for me.
I Like the Price
At $29 a year, I feel the price is fair for something robust that provides customization and is updated regularly. I have the middle of the road “Captain’s Package” which puts me at $135 a year for up to five sites, and I use all my licenses. Social Warfare isn’t a hokey operation, but a team of people, and I’ve contacted them for Customer Service a time or two. They responded quickly and fixed my problem(s).
I’m a Very Happy Customer
I just don’t have anything negative to say about Social Warfare, even if I dig deep. I even ask myself what I’d add if I could add anything to the plugin, and right now, there’s nothing. It’s got all the social buttons I want, and it has the functionality and customization I require in a social sharing plugin.
